Finding a Partner for NRI Children: A Guide for Families
In short
Search as a team: parents in India shortlist and hold first conversations with families locally, while the son or daughter abroad reviews profiles and joins video calls. Settle residency, relocation and timing questions early, and verify every overseas proposal carefully before any wedding.

When a son or daughter lives abroad, finding a partner becomes a two-country project. Done well, it plays to everyone’s strengths: parents know families and places in India, and the person abroad knows the life they are offering.
Divide the work
- Parents in India: shortlist, hold first calls with other families, meet locally and check details.
- The son or daughter abroad: review profiles, say yes or no quickly, and join video calls once there is mutual interest.
- Both: agree the priorities at the start and review the shortlist together, for example once a week.
Settle the big questions early
Overseas proposals stall most often on questions nobody asked at the start:
- Residency and visa status. Is the person a citizen, a permanent resident or on a work or student visa? It shapes when and whether a spouse can join.
- Where the couple will live. Abroad for good, a return to India, or undecided?
- Work for the spouse. Will they be able to work, and in what field?
- Timing. When is the next visit to India, and how long is it?
Putting these answers in the profile, for example in an NRI biodata, saves weeks.
Make the time difference work for you
Pick a regular time that suits both sides, such as a weekend morning abroad, which is evening in India. Short, regular reviews beat long, occasional ones.
Meet before committing
Plan in-person meetings around a visit to India, with both families involved. Video calls help, but they are not a substitute for meeting.
Protect against NRI marriage fraud
Most overseas proposals are genuine, but families, especially brides’ families, should be careful:
- Verify employment, immigration status and marital status with documents.
- Speak to the person’s family and, if possible, people who know them abroad.
- Be wary of pressure for a quick wedding followed by an immediate move.
- Register the marriage in India and keep copies of all documents.
- Keep contact details of the Indian embassy or consulate in the country concerned.
The Ministry of External Affairs publishes guidance for families on marriages with overseas Indians, and Indian missions abroad can help nationals in difficulty.
How Mafimo helps

Frequently Asked Questions
Should the match live abroad too?
Not necessarily. Many couples have one partner move after marriage. What matters is agreeing early where you will live.
How do we check an NRI proposal?
Confirm employment and immigration status with documents once talks are serious, speak to the family in India, and never rush a wedding followed by a quick move abroad.
When should the couple meet in person?
Before any commitment. Many families plan meetings around the NRI's next visit to India.
