Staying safe while looking for a match

Most matrimony scams follow the same pattern: a profile that seems perfect, quick emotional closeness, and then a request for money. Never send money to someone you have not met in person with your family, and report anyone who asks. In India, call 1930 or use cybercrime.gov.in for online fraud.

Common matrimony scams

The stories scammers tell most often on matrimonial sites.

  • The stranded NRI: a match living abroad says they are stuck at customs or an airport with a gift or cash, and needs you to pay a “clearance fee”.
  • The emergency: a sudden medical, legal or family crisis that needs money today.
  • The investment tip: a match who wants to help you grow your savings through trading, crypto or a special scheme.
  • The visa or job favour: an offer to arrange a visa, job or business opportunity abroad for a fee.
  • The video-call trap: a private video call that is recorded and later used for blackmail.
  • The fake official: someone claiming to be from a matrimony company, bank or the police, asking for fees, OTPs or documents.

Red flags worth walking away from

Any one of these is a reason to pause and talk to your family.

  • Any request for money, gifts, recharges or bank details, for any reason.
  • Reluctance to speak on a normal video call with family present, or to meet in person.
  • A rush to declare feelings or commit before the families have met.
  • Pressure to keep the conversation secret from parents or siblings.
  • Details that do not add up: job, city or family information that changes between conversations.
  • Requests for OTPs, passwords, photos of documents or private photos.

No genuine match will ask you for money before marriage. If someone asks, stop, tell a family member, and report the profile.

How Mafimo protects you

Safety is built into how Mafimo works.

  • Aadhaar offline verification confirms that people are who they say they are.
  • There is no in-app chat, so strangers cannot message you. Contact details are shared only between two people who are both verified.
  • Every profile has a Report button, and our team reviews each report.
  • You can hide any profile permanently.
  • Mafimo never charges fees. Anyone asking you to pay “for Mafimo” is not from us.

Meeting safely

Simple steps before and during a first meeting.

  • Talk on a video call with family members before meeting.
  • Verify what you are told independently: employer, education and family details.
  • Meet first in a public place, and tell someone where you will be.
  • Involve both families early. A genuine match will welcome it.
  • Keep your own transport and your own phone with you.

How to report

In the app, to us directly, and to the authorities.

  1. In the app: open the profile, choose Report, pick a category and reason, and add details if you can.
  2. By email: write to promise@mafimo.com with the profile details and what happened.
  3. If you have lost money or are being threatened in India, call the National Cyber Crime Helpline on 1930 straight away, and file a complaint at https://cybercrime.gov.in. In an emergency, call 112.
  4. Outside India, contact your local police and your country’s fraud reporting service.
