Questions to Ask at the First Family Meeting
In short
At a first family meeting, keep questions warm and practical: family, values, work, where the couple would live and expectations about roles. Give the two people time alone to ask their own questions about daily life, goals and what matters most to them.

The first meeting between two families sets the tone for everything after it. The aim is not an interview; it is for both families, and above all the two people, to see whether they are comfortable together.
Questions between the families
Family and home
- Tell us about your family. Who lives at home?
- How does your family usually make big decisions?
- What festivals and traditions are important to you?
Work and plans
- What does the person enjoy about their work, and where do they see it going?
- Where would the couple live after marriage? Near either family, in another city, abroad?
- Is anyone expecting to relocate for work in the next few years?
Roles and expectations
- How do you imagine household responsibilities being shared?
- Would the bride or groom be expected to live with the family?
- What are your thoughts on both partners working?
Questions for the two people
When the couple has time alone, these open questions tend to lead to real conversation:
- What does a normal weekday look like for you?
- What are you most proud of so far?
- What do you hope your life looks like in five years?
- How do you like to spend free time, alone and with others?
- How involved do you want our families to be in our life?
- How do you handle disagreements?
- What does money mean to you: saving, spending, supporting family?
- What would you like your partner to understand about you early on?
Questions to leave for later
Some questions matter but land badly at a first meeting: exact salary, property, dowry-like expectations and detailed questions about a previous marriage. Raise money matters later, openly and respectfully, once both sides are interested. Dowry is illegal in India, and any hint of it is a reason to walk away.
After the meeting
- Share impressions within your family, and above all ask the person how they felt.
- If there is interest on both sides, suggest a next step: a call between the two, or a second meeting.
- If not, say so kindly and promptly. A clear “no” is a courtesy.
Before anything is decided
However well a meeting goes, confirm key details independently before any commitment. Our guide to verifying a matrimony profile explains how.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it okay to ask about salary at the first meeting?
It is better to talk about work, stability and plans first. Specific money questions usually come later, once both sides are interested.
Should the couple talk alone at the first meeting?
Yes, for a while. It is the best way for them to judge whether they are comfortable together.
How many meetings are normal before deciding?
There is no rule. Many couples meet several times, and talk by phone and video, before deciding.
