Inter-faith and inter-caste matrimony
Many people and families care more about values, education and character than about religion or caste. On Mafimo you can say that you are open to an inter-faith or inter-caste match, and religious and community details are always optional.
Open to all, openly
Being open to a partner from any background is a real preference, not the absence of one. Saying it clearly on your profile helps you meet people who share that outlook, and saves time with families who do not.
Talking with families
Inter-faith and inter-caste matches go most smoothly when families talk early and honestly:
- Discuss which festivals, customs and rituals each family hopes to keep.
- Talk about how children would be raised, and which traditions they would learn.
- Agree on the kind of wedding ceremony, or ceremonies, you want.
- Give families time; acceptance often grows once they meet.
The Special Marriage Act
Two people of different religions can marry in India under the Special Marriage Act, 1954 without either changing their religion. The couple gives notice to the Marriage Officer of the district where one of them has lived for at least 30 days, the notice is displayed publicly for 30 days, and the marriage is then solemnised before three witnesses. Some states have additional laws on religious conversion, so couples should seek legal advice about their own situation.
